Prerequisites
Bachelor courses in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and computer programming
Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of vibrations of mechanical structures. The finite element method will be introduced on a set of problems of increasing complexity.

Programme to be Followed

Day 1: mass-spring-damper system, systems of points masses, time integration methods, explicit and implicit methods, variable time-step, elements of the Julia programming language;

Day 2:finite element modeling in one spatial dimensions, variational formulation, Galerkin method, assembly of stiffness matrix, mass matrix and load vector;

Day 3: finite element modeling in two spatial dimensions, mesh generation, assembly, solve, post-processing;

Day 4: finite element modeling of linear elastic media: problem formulation, reference solutions, pre-processing, problem set-up, problem solve, post-processing;

Day 5: student presentations;
