Coding experience/motivation in Python needed.

Some mathematical modelling/optimization background can be beneficial

Objectives

Discover electricity system planning (long-term) studies, and associated models and tools :

- [Theoretically] Unit Commitment and Generation Expansion Planning optimisation problems, impact of climate change on data of these models, game-theoretic concepts related to the collective decision-making between the different European countries

- [Numerically] Simulate a realistic future European electricity system based on PyPSA (Python) framework and European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) data. "Playing" the associated collective decision-making between countries in a serious game

Programme to be Followed

Simulate European electricity system planning (2050) in the form of a serious game. Each group of students will be responsible for designing the investment policy of a specific country, following the typical stages of such a long-term study:

1. Demand “projection”: depending on country, current electricity usages and future ones -> how much and type of “electrification”?

2. Production capacity: depending on cost and environmental targets (CO2 emissions), make a decision about Generation Expansion Planning*: new electricity production assets? Share of renewables/nuclear/thermal?

3. Network(s): after an introduction to basics of behavior/congestion aspects of networks at borders, collectively choose a scenario for future European interconnection capacities between simulated countries

4. Supply-demand equilibrium simulation: using a provided tool (based on PyPSA), schedule production to satisfy demand at minimal cost, on a European scale (Unit Commitment*). Observe main metrics: “failure”, (mean) production cost, renewable curtailment. Analyze impact of decisions made at previous stages (of items 1.-3.) on these metrics.

Even if with some theoretical lessons (on the physical, economical, and mathematical fundamentals of electricity system modelling), mostly simulations/practical course. Simulations will be run to observe the interactions of policies of all groups together at the European scale.

* Key optimization problems of the field you will be introduced to.
