Prerequisites
  • Participants should have a solid foundation in engineering and physics principles. It is recommended that participants have completed undergraduate coursework in one or more of the following areas:

-       Electrical engineering

-       Energy engineering

-       Mechanical or mechatronics engineering

-       Sustainable energy technologies

Objectives

THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT AT ENSAM IN PARIS, NOT TU DELFT.

Public transport infrastructures can be used as an extension of the electricity grid. This solution helps maximize the use of existing infrastructures, make sustainability and electrification projects possible even in congested grid areas, and minimize the energy consumption and costs of public transport systems.

The participants will learn how existing train, metro, tram, and trolleybus grids can be used to supply more loads such as EV chargers, buildings, and even construction sites, and how they can successfully integrate renewables and energy storage systems.

The course will consist of lectures, scientific papers presentations, multiple mini group projects that lead up to a final case-study group project on re-designing the existing public transport grid of a chosen city.

The course will be divided into 5 modules:

·         Module 1: Introduction to public transport vehicles and grids
What are the characteristics and differences between a train, a tram, a metro, a trolleybus, an electric bus, and an IMC bus? How do they get their electrical power supply? How can we use these grids to do more and why should we?

·         Module 2: Modeling of electric vehicles and grids
How can you model the power and energy demand of an electric vehicle such as a bus or a metro? How do you calculate the power flows in a traction grid? What parameters should you check when evaluating the performance of a grid?

·         Module 3: Renewable sources and energy storage in traction grids
What type of renewable are suited for supplying traction grids and why not? And which energy storage technologies? What are the biggest challenges for renewables and energy storage in traction grids? How to model solar and wind systems and size them for a traction grid?

·         Module 4: The transportation grid as a multi-functional grid
What third-party loads can be connected to a transport grid? What benefits are in this coupling for both the transport grid and the third-party users (and other stakeholders)? How to properly decide and size third party loads and define the techno-economic business case.

·         Module 5: Pilots and practical examples of multi-functional traction grids
Pilots and examples from around The Netherlands and the world, and lessons learnt from them and how to apply them to the final case study.
