Prerequisites
Basic mechanics of structures and matrix algebra
Objectives
After the course, students should understand the concept of designing civil engineering structures spanning large distances and areas. In particular, students should be able to shape lightweight arches and ribbed vaults by methods of structural mechanics and computational matrix algebra.
Programme to be Followed
Equilibrium and deformation of bending-free and shear-free arches. The optimum form-finding problem: arches and ribbed vaults of minimum weight. Computational approach to optimum form-finding. Examples and self-study cases.
