Objectives
The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with technologies of the Li-ion battery family as well as with the basics of post-Li-ion battery systems. The overview of the components, measurements, assembly and parameters will be made. After the course, the participants should be able to determine battery parameters/limitations/hazards from their chemical description, match the battery to the requirements (application), and assess if the selection of batteries for a given application is correct.
Programme to be Followed
The course will introduce participants to the basics of modern batteries, how they operate, review the technology details, what components they consist of, how they are manufactured and how they are applied in mobility or other industries. Wider scope of battery technologies beyond Li-ion, not commercialized yet, will also be presented. Part of the course will be dedicated to practical aspects, like hands-on battery cell assembly, battery components production and electrochemical measurements. Among the topics presented will also be parameters of the batteries and battery components, and their influence on performance, the effect of materials' choice on the final battery, basic calculations for battery properties, basics of manufacturing and measurement equipment for the battery industry. Students will design a battery cell for a given application using the knowledge from lectures and laboratories during the course.
